Message From The Parish Priest
Sunday 4th November 2007
THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CYCLE C + NOVEMBER 4TH 2007. MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS.
MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST
My Dear People,
The days of the Forty Hours devotion are nearly over, concluding with Solemn Benediction on this Sunday afternoon at 4pm. At St Kentigerns. I do hope many will be able to come to end this extraordinary time of peace and grace which our Lord has released on the community during this time. Every class in our School made a visit with their teacher during Thursday and Friday and it was great to hear the children's voices raised in prayerful adoration. St Edwards will have their Forty Hours in two weeks time.
Each of those candles you so carefully bought and labelled represents a heart filled with fervent faith. How else can one explain 600 candles being burnt in honour of the Divine Presence in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar? Each flame is a mark of a warm and loving heart as it reaches out to the Lord in humility and prayer. The name are like a roll call of your loves including babes and kids and parents and grandparents, spouses, living and dead - all names are written on those candles and each one is a sign of a person's faith and love. Together on the altar they combine to form a sea of light and warmth and peace and beauty - an anticipation for when we shall be in Heaven and adoring in an unbroken moment the adorable beauty of the Living and Triune Go, Father , Son and Holy Ghost. What a great treat we have to look forward to. How many of our loved ones are already enjoying that Divine Radiance when God is All in All.
For the Holy Souls we had another Commemoration this week - the Feast of the Commemoration of all the Dead. The Month began on Thursday with All the Saints. We celebrated all those of our fellow Christians (and others) who are now in Heavenly Bliss. And now we pray in November for all the Holy Souls who are waiting for Heavenly Bliss.
The souls suffer our lack of prayer for them. They are holy and will go to Heaven but they are being purified of the dross that was left in them at the moment of death. Like the deep sea diver coming up - Purgatory is like the De-compression chamber. It is like covering the eyes until they can take the Light of God in Heaven. But is painful in Purgatory and the Holy Souls depend on our petitions. No Christian should fail to have a Mass offered for the Dead of their family during this Month.
Father Flynn and myself will be offering our Mass most days for the Holy Souls you have written in the Book of Remembrance and the Masses for the Dead handed in so do not delay and let your relatives down.
The Holy Souls cries out to you "Hey, our Bridie - when are you going to have a Mass offered for me ? - I am wanting to get out of here and go to my Lord, our Lady and all the saints in Heaven!!" The Mass is the greatest Prayer on earth for it is Christ's own High Priestly prayer for the human race for He is the Head of the Human Race. Do not underestimate the power of this sublime Offering.
Zachaeus had the wonderful words of Jesus addressed to him after his conversion - "Today Salvation has come to this house!"
May this month of prayer and this Forty Hours of loving adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament mean for us that a new measure of our Lord's gift of salvation has been given to us as a community and as individuals.
With every grace and Blessing,
Father Tom Connolly
