Message From The Parish Priest
Sunday 9th September 2007
TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY OF THE YEAR IN ORDINARY TIME + 9TH SEPTEMBER 2007.. CYCLE C READINGS.
MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST
My Dear People,
The schools and colleges are back and soon the University students will be pouring in for Fresher's Week and all the societies and clubs of the students will lay their displays on the Union tables and recruit new members. It is a decisive moment for so many of our dear young people, pray for them that they make the right choices and choose good new friends for the consequences of not doing are worrying are they not? This is especially true for our fellow Catholic and Christian students for whom there is always that choice of being loyal to Jesus or not. The temptations are great and the promises are alluring but the fulfilment is lacking. Only Our Lord can fulfil the deep longings of the human hearts - after all He made us, we are the work of His hands so he knows what is for our good. Not good thing comes cheap. One has to struggle for it. Even clever people have to apply themselves you know to get anywhere.
In the Gospel today our Lord teaches us about the true cost of discipleship. Those of you who are or have experience of the Building Trade will relate the Our Blessed Lord's example.
What a fool a builder or client would look of they began the foundations and found they had not enough cash to complete the house. It would be a bit like those unfinished flats built on backing off the Platt Fields and Wilbraham. They stand forever as a folly of the guy who began them don't they?
So Our Lord tells us the same. The measure you must have when you are reckoning what it takes to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in his Holy Catholic Church is this - I must give up anything or any possession or obsession or whatever if it is going to prevent me from belonging to Christ and His Kingdom.
Is that asking too much? Hardly. It is questions of eternal life and the destiny of the human soul in Christ. I am baptised into Christ's death - I am grafted on to his Mystical and Glorified Body - I am a citizen with all the saints so surely I must measure the cost of remaining so. Many folk sacrifice many things in pursuit of a worthy goal. There is no more worthy goal than God is there - in the final analysis?
God bless for now,
Fr. Tom Connolly
