Sunday 8th June 2008. TENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR IN CYCLE A READING. + THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR LADY APPEARING IN LOURDES.

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST

My Dear People,

Our Lord directly speaks of himself as the physician of our souls in the Gospel as we hear it read today. Jesus is the "doctor" he refers to and in that case all mankind stands in need of his healing touch.

Those who prided themselves on being "virtuous" were anything but because they could not understand why our Lord ate with public sinners and tax collectors. Our Lord's reply that he had come to call and to heal all and especially those who needed most the Divine Mercy to be shown to them.

There are so many folk out there who would be saints if they were able to hear the Faith proclaimed to them and they would turn to God and live outstanding lives in his presence but they don't hear and nobody is telling them so they cannot respond.

On the Friday after Corpus Christi - the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated.

Our Lord appeared to St Margaret Mary who was a late vocation to the Visitation Order of nuns in France. Jesus had prepared her for an extraordinary mission and her life story is like a Hollywood film. However, our Lord appeared to her many, many times even before she entered the nuns (even as a 9 year old) so he prepared her heart and soul for the mission he was giving her which was to spread the devotion to our Lord under the image and the title of "The Sacred Heart". This was in the 1670's.

Our Lord told Margaret Mary that the hearts of men and women had grown cold towards him and that his heart was on fire with love for mankind.

He showed the visionary the image of his Sacred Heart. On top was a black and empty Cross which was being engulfed in flames emerging from the top of his heart. Around the heart was the crown of thorns and the wound from the Centurion's lance which was visible and still bleeding. Jesus said that this image of himself with his red and white garment and his hand pointing to the Heart on fire with love was to be printed and spread throughout the Christian world.

He made various promises to the Saint. He said that he would protect the homes of believers who had this image of the Sacred Heart installed in their homes and honoured it; hence the custom of consecrating the new homes of believers to the Sacred Heart and placing the names of the domestic family at the bottom of the picture. Often a red light is burnt 24/7 in front of it.

He also promised that if the Christian went to Mass and Confession and Communion on the Nine First Fridays of each month consecutively that he would give that person the grace of final repentance before they died. That was our Lord's Promise.

All of this was done so that the Doctor of our souls - Jesus - could minister to the ones he loved so much. He wanted to inflame our hearts with the divine love by this image of his tender and plentiful MERCY. People in those days used to go to Holy Communion only twice a year because they thought that they were not worthy enough!! Well - we would never go if that was the case eh?

A bit like the modern 20th Century devotion of the DIVINE MERCY and St Faustinia - all of this was our Lord's practising from his place at the heart of the Trinity his bountiful mercy to all mankind. We are all called by him to taste of this Mercy which is without end and yet many refuse to acknowledge that they even have any need of it at all!!!! They say that they are okey. They must be mad to say they have no need.

If the hearts of the men and women of the 1670's had grown cold, what would our Lord say to us now?

May we be open to the loveliness of the Heart of Jesus on fire with love for us and may we bask in its warmth and its heat. He has invited us "Indeed, I have come to call sinners". So - there you have it.

God bless you all,

Father Tom Connolly.
