Message From The Parish Priest
Sunday 11th May 2008
PENTECOST SUNDAY + 11TH MAY 2008.
MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST
My Dear People,
Today is the Birthday of our Holy Mother the Church. She began really in the womb of the Blessed Virgin but today she was "launched" as it were on a waiting world. Christ had come "in the fullness of time" so it was the time chosen by God for the greatest effect. The roads and trade routes of the Roman Empire were able to accommodate the Apostles and the disciples' mission to carry them as far as India (St Thomas).
You will notice how the house - the Upper Room - was shaking with movement and the sounds of wind and the ball of flame and then the tongues of flame - came. Fire and wind - elements which move and carry and purify. The wind you cannot see except in its effects and the same for the Holy Spirit. You cannot see him but you can see his effects. When the first Martyrs of the English Reformation - the Carthusian monks of Smithfield, London gathered in the choir stalls on hearing of their closure and mass arrest - the Holy Spirit came upon them in a most sweet and calm breeze as they sang Vespers. Every single monk was executed in the end - some left to literally starve to death in prison and others publicly executed. The Holy Spirit fortified them.
He is always there in those moments when we could go either way. He draws and nudges and hints and sometimes grabs us by the hair as he did so often with St Peter.
He is the One whom Jesus promised to send from Heaven when he "returned to the the Father." Jesus said: "I will ask the Father and he will send you the Holy Spirit who will remind you of everything I have said to you." He still does.
The Catholic Church can never forget God's Word. Individuals might take no notice of it and deny it but the Church will never deny the truth as revealed by God because the Holy Spirit will always be there to "remind". He guides the Pope especially when he teaches. He keeps us in unity and charity and he is the power which comes on the bread and wine and at Holy Mass and "changes" the elements into the Body and Blood of the Lord through the words of Consecration uttered by a validly ordained priest.
He is the one who elects a new Pope and directs him so that he will never lead us astray in matters of Faith and Morals. It is guaranteed. It is not us being clever which achieves this. It is the promise of Jesus - my Church will be built on rock and the devil will never win against it. Christ looks after his own flock. In the lives of the saints we see the Holy Spirit at work in wonderful ways.
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit which our children are being given at Confirmation are:
Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgement, Courage, Knowledge, Reverence and Fear and Awe in God's Presence.
The Fruits are, Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self control. Where these are present in people's hearts you will be assured of the Holy Spirit's Divine Presence. Where you find them absent - watch out - the devil is at work!!
The children will next be making their first Communion from St Kentigerns School and Parish on the 15th and 22th June. Pray for them and their parents that they will make good Catholics when they mature and bring the Faith to others.
CROWNING OF OUR LADY IN ST KENTIGERNS SCHOOL TOOK PLACE AT 2.00 THIS THURSDAY EACH FAMILY SENT THEIR CHILD WITH SOME FLOWER(S) FOR THIS HAPPY OCCASION.

Bidding Prayers for Pentecost Sunday 08
Priest: Let us bless the Eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has poured out on the nations the grace of the Holy Spirit.
Reader: The Father gave his Beloved Son as a light for all peoples - open the eyes of a blind world to see Christ as the future of Humanity. Lord hear us.
Send your Holy Spirit to give rest to the weary, and to comfort the dying- strengthen our faith - give life and joy to the broken hearted. Lord hear us.
Today is the Birthday of the Church - renew her in the Holy Spirit - drive far from her those would plot for her downfall - strengthen all those who have the pastoral care of the People of God and especially we pray for our clergy that they may be true shepherds of the flock of Christ. Lord hear us.
The Father anointed Christ with the Power of the Holy Spirit for his ministry of salvation - may he pass once more among us, healing the sick and doing good for everyone as we pray for our sick: John Maughan, Mary Page, Mary Cahill, Maureen Galvin, Fr Keane, Fr McMahon, John Francis Walsh, Stephen Sharples, Kevin McNulty. Maureen Waring. Lord hear us.
Fulfil the hope of the faithful departed - Paddy O'Boyle, Kathleen Johnson, Gerard Whelan, Mary Davis, Desmond Doherty AND for all who anniversaries fall now: Mary O'Brien, Eileen Thompson, Patrick Deignan, William Howarth and Mary Corrigan - raise them up in glory when Christ comes again.
May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
O Mary, conceived with sin. Pray for us who have recourse to thee.
Mary is the spouse of the Holy Spirit and bore that most excellent of all fruits - Jesus Christ the Word made flesh - may she pray for the Spirit to come to us on this great feast of Pentecost. Hail Mary...
Priest: O God who dwells in the hearts of the faithful by the presence of the Holy Spirit - we pray that this divine indwelling may ever console us and hear and answer our prayers. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
