Message From The Parish Priest
TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR IN ORDINARY TIME.+ 19TH OCTOBER 2008. YEAR OF ST PAUL THE APOSTLE AND THE 150 OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES.
MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST.
My Dear People,
There has never been a time I suppose that the relationship between the Ecclesia of God's people and the political power structures of a nation was easy. Even in very religious cultures where the State adopts a particular Faith as its own there is tension between the Church and the State. Even the all powerful Romans had to respect the Jews and their faith and laws.
Hard to believe now in the context of what used to be Catholic Nation states that they now are passing same sex unions laws and even abortion. In Catholic French Canada and in the Irish Free State up to the 1960's one could not buy a condom or get a divorce, such was the support of the State for the faith of the vast majority of its Catholic people. When enough believers - believe and do so strongly - the State kind of has to go along with it and perhaps the State in any case is itself made up of Catholic people (or whatever religion it might be - Muslim, C of E etc) in its Cabinet and Civil Service. So the retreat from Catholic Morality in a Catholic nation or Christian morality and ethics in a Christian nation shows that the grip of the religious faith of the people is slipping.
You will notice that the Director General of the BBC said on Tuesday that the BBC will deal more carefully with Islam than with Catholicism or Anglicanism because they are a minority and (he should have added) a very committed lot who don't tolerate their faith being mocked. So the great institutions of State are influenced by the religion or religions of its populace.
Our Blessed Lord was put in an impossible situation in order to trick him and set him up as a political trouble maker so that his enemies could arraign him before the Romans. But our Lord typically - being the Divine Wisdom in the flesh - melted their case by his famous words:
"Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's."
How about that then for a one liner? The answer of course is always well - how do you define what is God's? The USA Bishops have come out very strongly against politicians who claim to be Catholic and yet vote for abortion and other immoral measures. They say that they personally believe it is wrong, but they are law makers and they cannot impose this morality on fellow Americans. The Bishops say - well don't come to Holy Communion then, for you render to Caesar what is God's - the human life in the womb. Imagine telling Hitler that you would vote for the murder of the Jews because your fellow Germans demanded it? Would you be right ? Of course not.
Our political system will be measured and judged by God. It is not exempt from the Divine Judgement. Cyrus the Persian king did not realise he was being an instrument of the one True God when he decided that the Jews should be allowed to go home from their exile but he was.
Our western Democracies will not escape the judgement of God just as the greed of many has caused the disasters in our economies - no escaping from the credit now and never pay mentality. In the end - all these utterly immoral measures doled out by Parliament will have their "pay back" time.
Do take a leaflet today on the Embryology Bill and read it and act upon it - time is short and the enemy well financed an organised - so write to your MP and or PM.
