EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR. + 1ST AUGUST 2010.

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST.

My Dear People,

It is good to be back after one week away. I was in a lovely little cove in the most Easterly part of the Spanish nation - Menorca and happened to be there on the feast of St James the Apostle and he is the local saint of the Parish.

What fun they had with a procession through the streets after the Mass in national costume. They had a visitation of a group of riders on a local kind of breed of black horses - all stallions - which were ridden with amazing skills and did all kinds of tricks. The riders all wore a smart and ancient uniform and attended Mass whilst the horses were looked after outside the church.

There was a great funfair for the families and loads of kids and teenagers came and no trouble or drunkenness at all was seen at least by me!! The local food was being served with a drink which consisted of Gin and Lemon-juice was being consumed everywhere. But you see Spain is still blest with family life and folk marry and tend to stay married when they have their kids so it shows - God's Plan actually works for our happiness.

The last Rider was the Parish Priest himself who got a big ovation and wore a different kind of uniform from the rest but was a good a rider as any. Don't ask me to ride a horse. I tried it in Ireland when I was 12 and nearly broke every bone!

I always have time to reflect on human life when I am on a lazy holiday. One cannot help but observe the kinds of passing fellow pilgrims as we all re create ourselves and enjoy the change and the rest. We all share a common humanity - young and old.

I am particularly struck by the families with young kids and the dynamic of being parents and being a child with siblings and to see the reactions and responses families make within one another's circle. Family life is so, so precious isn't it? I can remember with great warmth and gratitude the wonderful summers, spent on my grandparent's farm in Co Galway. This City of Manchester kid was chasing the cockerel and gathering the eggs in hidden parts of parts of barns. We gathered in the hay or turned it. We helped Uncle Joe bring in the turf, dried out in the August sun. We make the tea and took up the brack to the men harvesting - we watched the cows being milked, the pigs fed, and saw the horse being watered and we joined in the Angelus and the Rosary with my maiden aunt Tess (then) and uncle Joe and granny and granddad. What a dream it was.

Caravan in North Wales too, with my mother and my aunt Ethel - the lovely beaches and the rocks and dunes and sea and hearing the wind around the caravan at night. All these precious experiences showed me I was loved and cared for by those close to me. It never entered my head that I was not! I was always with one or two of my brothers as well.

This is the "Storing up of the treasure in Heaven" isn't it? The time and love people invest in children and virtue is stored up in Heaven. Shrouds don't have pockets and our kids are our treasure. We should not "spoil" them but we should love them tenderly and give them good formation for life. Riches will not guarantee anything. Having the Dosh helps of course. Without it we are hard up - but it must not be all and the end all. This is what our Lord is teaching us in the holy Gospel today. Long live Married Life and God Bless all you mummies and daddies who give such good formation to your little ones - it will come back to you like bread on the water- believe me - it is worth the struggle!

God Bless,

Fr Tom Connolly
