SIXTEENTH SUNDAY OF YEAR C + 18TH JULY 2010.

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST.

My Dear People,

This week has seen the Retirements of three great educators in our diocese - Martin Lochery, the Director of the Diocesan School's Commission, Mr Paul Jackson, the Head of St Kentigerns' and Mr Paddy Heneghan, the Head of The Divine Mercy and once head of St Edwards. It is the end of an era as they say. Huge thanks are due to the dedication and hard work and talent they have brought to their respective callings. Thousands of our children and staff have benefited from an excellent and Catholic Education experience.

The two sisters mentioned into the Gospel stand for the active and contemplative life of the Church.

Martha and Mary were the sisters of Lazarus who our Lord raised from the dead. Our Lord often used to spend the night at their house with no doubt Peter, James and John. They loved the Master to bits as you can see from the Resurrection encounter with Mary in the Garden when she mistook Him for the gardener. "Do not touch me" Jesus exclaimed to Mary as she clinged to his knees, "for I have not ascended to my Father". You see the "clinging" to Jesus in this was to stop and we and Mary would cling to him in a much closer way - in faith he would be always with us and in Communion - actually - WITHIN us.

However - that was in the future. This is the moment when Jesus decided to come and stay, and Martha and Mary were dead busy preparing for the Master but when he came - Mary forgot her domestic duties and went and sat at the Lord's feet listening to him and his words with rapt attention.

Martha seeing that her sister was no longer scurrying around shouts to Jesus "Lord do you not see my sister is a lazybones, leaving it all to me??"

Jesus gives the famous reply interpreted in so many ways over the years. "Martha, Martha, you worry and fret over so many things, yet few are needed, indeed ONLY ONE - and it is Mary who has chosen the better part."

Now, think about that. To do the serving or to sit at the Master's feet and contemplate - which is it to be? Well - you have to do both don't you - but not when Jesus is sitting in your living room - you don't go wasting time in the kitchen. Mary is praised by Jesus for her excellent choice. There is a time and a place is there not and Martha missed it and she did not succeed in getting our Lord to take her side.

Prayer time is not wasted and is not in competition - it is complimentary and gives meaning and value to your work. In the end it is "the better part" - superior to all other activity.

Please pray for the success of the Pope's Visit.

God Bless whilst I take a week off,

Father Tom Connolly
