TWENTY SEVENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR A. 2ND OCTOBER 2011. MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY.

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST.

My Dear People,

Last week I told you that I would be praying for you all my dear parishioners at the Shrine in France of St Theresa of Lisieux - known as the "Little Flower." She was some flower I can tell you. You will see her in pictures wearing the Habit of the Carmelite Order and holding a Crucifix and roses falling around and from the crucifix. This is a reminder that she said that she would spend her heaven doing good on earth. She called the graces she would ask God for us - "roses".

On her death bed at the age of twenty four after eight years in the enclosed Carmel she used to take the rose petals and stroke our Lord's wounds with them from the crucifix in her hands - a Happy Death Cross. Her sisters in the Order used these petals as relics and favours were granted so quickly and miracles galore.

She was asked to write a little account of her short life so that when she died they would be able to "say something" about her. The notebooks were completed when she was too weak to write through St Theresa dictating. Well when she died and this account of her life from childhood onwards spread through the Church like a bush fire. Miracles and favours were granted in huge numbers. Having died in 1898 she was canonised by 1927.

She said that she would offer her life and spend her heaven for the conversion of sinners, for priests and for missionaries. The Pope made her Patron Saint of the Missions - one who never left France! You see the heart of the Catholic Faith is being a child of God and being in love with our Blessed Lord who is so deserving of all my love because he is so much our Saviour having given his life for each of us "for the forgiveness of sin". She discovered that her role was to be "Love at the heart of the Church". Now we know that without that kind of love at the heart of the Church we would all grow cold and would become simply members of an organization.

She taught a spiritual doctrine too of the Little Way. There is today in our Country a "Little Way Association" and it does wonderful work in little ways. You see it is in the detail of my life that I show in "little ways" my love for God and neighbour. They all add up and are important in making the world more Christ like. Indeed it make me more like Christ too. Our Lord is to be loved and adored and cherished in every little way. Blessed John Paul made her a Doctor of the Church - only a few of those you know in the 2000 year history of the Church - ten, I recall so you can see why the priests - all twenty of us made the pilgrimage. She said she would "pray for Priests". I want to end by giving you a taste of her prayer for priests and you will see the beauty of this young nun's soul who died of terrible TB at the age of 24 and suffered agony.

She writes: "O Jesus, eternal Priest keep your priests within the shelter of Your Sacred Heart, where none may touch them. Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch your Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with your Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood. Let your holy love surround them and shield them from the world's contagion. Bless their labours with abundant fruit and may the souls to whom they minister be their joy and consolation here, and in heaven, their beautiful and everlasting crown. Amen". One last one - "Do not be afraid to tell Jesus that you love him even though it be without feeling, this is the way to oblige him to help you, and carry you like a little child too feeble to walk".

You know I prayed for many things at her tomb but I prayed for good weather for the Marian Procession and LOOK WHAT WE GOT!!!

Thanks to Fr George for holding the fort last week and Fr Egan at St Edwards for the Mass.

God Bless You all,

Father Tom Connolly
