TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY YEAR A + 4TH SEPTEMBER 2011.

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PREIST

My Dear People,

Well - this is an historic moment for it is the first Sunday we are using the new translation from the Latin into English. It will take some getting used to but it is the priest's part that has changed the most so be patient if I am a bit slower in delivery. Use the Mass Sheet and buy a little Booklet with all the new Mass in (large Print if you ask) at £1.50...not even the price of a birthday card eh?

The words we use to fulfil our loving duty and privilege of honouring Almighty God in the way laid down by our Divine Lord are very important and should be as perfect as we can possibly make them.

Blessed John Paul began this re-translation task and it has been going on for over ten years. The same Translation will be used in all English speaking nations. The English is good and a more accurate translation of the original Latin. The "I confess", the "Glory to God" and the Creed are the things we will have to get used to afresh. The "Holy, Holy" is slightly different and so on - We will be into it by Christmas and at Advent the new Roman Altar Missal comes out and It is a very beautifully produced Missal.

THE GOSPEL TEACHING

Oh my dear people, we have a tough one today. Our Blessed Lord's teaching on the way of forgiveness in his Church is always one which get us worked up.

Number one - we all have situations where we are willing to be reconciled after an offence but the other party wants none of it. Secondly, we have Enemies who avoid us or cut us off. Maybe within our own family circle we have ones who have cut us off years ago and we do not know why. They must have some reason but we are "Not Guilty". Then there are those situations where forgiveness might seem to be a kind of undeserving and un warranted "APPROVAL" where there has been no expression of regret. We also have the situations where my reaching out is harshly refused and I am hurt.

The main thrust of our Lord’s teaching today is our reaction when we feel that we have had a wrong done against us by a brother/sister. You are to have it out with them one-to-one. That is the first port of call. It is not meant to be an angry confrontation either. Choose the moment where you are not still angry.

You know it is much easier and more enjoyable to tell everyone else about the wrong you have suffered than to face the person isn't it? That is unredeemed human nature. But we who are redeemed and live in the Spirit must be different. We must swallow the fear of reprisal, rejection, anger etc and face our offending brother or sister. Who knows, it might be a complete misunderstanding and wrong interpretation so all can be put right.

However there are those very serious situations where is a refusal to listen and so the heavies are brought it. This is how it is even now in Church Law when dealing with a cleric who appears to be going off the rails in Faith or Morals. This is the way the Bishop deals with it. It is our Lord’s way. In the end the offender can be thrown out—what you loose on earth etc.

We also have to learn to bear with one another’s weaknesses and that sometimes is misjudgements without going crazy with indignation. After all – I have been guilty too and I have been the offender and I have mercy on myself don’t I? However – within the Church - be open and candid with one another and do not let offences fester and go bad.

God bless you all and keep us all in in peace with one another.

Fr Tom Connolly.
