9th Sunday A + 6th March 2011.
MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST.
My Dear People,
Not all those who call Lord, Lord to Jesus Christ our Blessed Lord will find themselves on the right side in the end. How do we know this? Well our Lord spells it out in the Gospel for this last Sunday before Lent.
It is easy to say Lord – Lord did we not do - - - - - in your name? And what does Jesus say to them? A bit harsh may but he says it to their faces (in yer face) "I have never known you; away from me, you evil men."
Gosh - that is a bit hard is it not? Well it is but it is meant to warn every generation that there will be charlatans dressed up as saints and even miracle workers in every age who are not at all the friends of God. This is true even to the extent that our Lord tells them he has NEVER KNOWN them. They think they have known him but it takes a two way communication in the life of the Christian person does it not.? It is a Communion of life and love between the Christian believer and his/her Lord and His Mystical Body, the Holy Church.
So who is that person in our Lord's definition? I shall tell you says Saint Matthew - It is the person who listens to the these words of Christ and ACTS on them. In other words - real Faith in the theological Virtue of Faith – is to believe without doubting what God has revealed and to act upon it.
Many people feel today that they can go along with the Catholic Faith only so far then they can pick and choose from the menu the world offers them. This does not work. Faith is spelt our and experienced in ACTION. You have to ACT our your Faith in real moral choices in this world.
You have to say NO to some very fashionable ways of doing things even if it means you are called old fashioned or not "with it". And when you (that wise man/woman) have built your faith on this sound rocklike foundation (all you builders please note) - then it will withstand the storms of life.
It will be strong and firm against all manner of terrible things thrown at us. Think of the couple who were good foster carers and now taken off the list of approved because they refuse to hypothetically say that being active gay is good and perfectly fine and moral. The whole country knows about it now and our enemies in Stonewall etc are shouting from the housetops about Bigotry being put down. It is they who are the bigots against us. Our Moral teaching is shared by most of the Christian world and indeed some of it by the Muslim too. They hate us because we stand on the rock and will not give in to their evil views. The lies abound but Satan is the Father of Lies as our Lord has told us so we would expect it. You see you have to withstand the terrible things they say about the believer. The Law now is very harsh on our Moral teaching about Man and Woman and other related matters.
So - Lent is coming and the fasting and almsgiving will be our lot. Mary’s Meals and Aid to the Church in Need and Cornerstones will be our Lenten Alms Charity. The slot is at the safe in the porch.
Ash Wednesday is next Wednesday a day of Fasting for the over 18s and under 65 and Abstinence from Meat for us all. So you Veggies are at an advantage that day aren’t you? Masses on Ash Wed at the usual time of 9.30 but at St Kents there will be one at 7pm as well. The schools will have Mass and Ashes also.
Stations of the Cross at St Kentigerns will be prayed on weekdays in the short form and on Sundays at 4pm with Benediction at the end.
The 9.30 on Ash Wednesday at St Kentigerns will also be the Requiem Mass for the late Tommy Mimnagh - may God be good to him.
So a Happy Lent.
Father Tom Connolly
