TWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR Cycle A BISHOP BRAIN’S VISITATION TO ST KENTIGERNS.. . 9th OCTOBER 2011.
MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST
My Dear People,
Now the Gospel today is that of the invited Wedding guests and their refusal to attend.
Have you ever been insulted by some one wasting your precious Wedding Invitation by not turning up or telling you they are too busy to attend?
How ungrateful and ungracious these people can be. Well - our Lord is talking about a greater thing than a wedding feast. He is talking about the kingdom of Heaven and the Heavenly Banquet. He is talking about the Wedding Feast of the Lamb Himself in the Kingdom of Heaven - Eternal Life.
Imagine refusing that? It is no wonder the King got mad. This is especially true when they not only had better things to do but actually got so annoyed with the invitation given that they actually murdered some of the servants bearing the Invitations (the Prophets, Saints and the martyrs).
So the consequence is eternal darkness for them and the chattering of teeth - hell - Agh! But it is true - there is no half way house for them. The guy without the wedding garment has always raised questions. You see in our Lord's time everyone got a wedding garment given to them as they came into the wedding feast. So they guy was not a bona fide guest. It is interpreted as one lacking the Baptismal Garment which was freely available but he refused and so is thrown out by the angel bouncers.
So - there we have it. It is a parable about people who make choices and some choices are so negative against the invitation from God to enter into friendship with him that they end up losing everything and it is their own free choice. You could say that we make a God of "FREE CHOICE" BUT WHAT IS THE USE OF CHOICE IF YOU DO NOT CHOOSE RIGHTLY? To worship choice is idolatry. The important choice is to obey God not to choose not to!! Now that is basic is it not? However there are those in Government and the professions who think that choice is above morality and they are badly misguided. So remember – you and I are all invited to the King’s Wedding - don't miss out. Don't use your God given freedom to refuse the invite.
Father Tom Connolly.
