SEVENTH SUNDAY A 20TH FEBRUARY 2011.

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST

My Dear People,

Today we have the continuation of the Sermon on the Mount with the famous "I say to you..." sayings of our Lord and Saviour. Here he is fulfilling the Law of Moses given by God all those years before. It goes without saying that these commandments are the foundation stones of Western Civilization. Forgiveness and even love for those who persecute you - even praying for them. We must Bless those who curse us...love your enemies - turn the other cheek. We must not take revenge.

We might not have kept these teachings in the Western world but they have formed the values by which we measure ourselves. Love for the enemy is unknown in any religious faith but ours. The gift of oneself to those who hate us is without precedent. That is why after the war the Enemy wanted to be captured by the American or the Allied Forces. If they fell into the hands of the Soviets - atheists to a man, their fate was sealed and they were murdered or sent as slaves to the gulags.

Now this basis of our civilization is quickly disappearing. The Ann Owens's report on the Treatment of the Elderly in some of our NHS Hospitals was appalling and she said that she wants us to read it so that we know just how terrible it is. She gets 5000 such complaints every year as Ombudsman for the NHS TREATMENTS, Is it not sad that the training given to Florence Nightingale by the Irish Sisters of Charity in Mare Street in the East End of London has been lost on the new professionals.

The Matron and the Ward Sister's and Staff nurses and Nurses and auxiliaries have all gone whilst the profession fought the feminist fight for equality with the docs and hey all had to get degrees. Now the graduates do not think that they should dirty their hands with bed pans!! Seriously though folks let us not blame just the NHS. This kind of cruelty to the very young and the very old is not in the News everyday. We have a kid in a pushchair left to starve and then toast in front of the fire whilst his boozy mum is ministered to by the social workers who neglect the very one hey are meant to protect - the child. Eighteen people complained about the danger to the child and were ignored. They will say "lessons have been learned" BUT WE KNOW THEY HAVE NOT. No one will be sacked or put on trial for this. The elderly man who is smashed up at his door for few bob. The elderly lady beaten without mercy as well as robbed. No need to beat up was there? They take pleasure in violence. That is common where the love and knowledge of Jesus Christ and his teaching is lost. What with the law makers trying to destroy marriage by making cohabitation the same and civil same sex partnerships the same as marriage they devalue the one institution that God has make - Married Life - which has he greatest success at bringing up children well and to be good citizens. The nation will pay the price of persecuting faith and our people and our institutions like the Catholic Children's Rescue.

As the Pope told us all at Westminster - the Faith civilizes people. It gives them a measure to go by - a standard to uphold. Even crime now is not punished as it Should be so even the judges have lost it. It is a long way from the Mount of the Beatitudes but to me they are signs of a deteriation in public life, brought on by the loss of respect for human life and the Law of Christ .

God Bless us all,

Father Tom Connolly
