FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER A
MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST
My Dear People,
What goes around comes around and guess what??? We are back to giving up meat on Fridays from 12th September. If you are a Veggie like Father George you can carry on gorging yourself on a Friday - joke. No - you veggies have to do another form of Penance like visiting a sick person but don't tell them you are doing this as a Friday Penance will you? They might get upset.
The Bishops decided to bring this ancient practise back which was dropped in 1984 to mark the anniversary of the Papal Visit and to do something to show together - that it is the Day of the Lord's Passion and therefore a day to remember our Lord’s sufferings. It will be interesting for formal Friday night dinners won’t it, when we, like the Jews will now have special Dietary needs!!!
On top of this the New Mass Translation - begun by the Blessed John Paul II many years ago is now complete and is ready to be published. It will not involve many changes for you but the Priest's part will contain a totally new translation from the Latin and I promise you it is very nice to hear and I know you will like it better. I do. You will have to get used to a few changes of wording like "And with your Spirit". This will be given us in written form for all in late Summer. In Scotland and Ireland it is coming sooner. Booklets will be given to you so don't worry. Just read it out.
The Gospel today is one of the ones I often choose for Requiem Masses. "There are many rooms in my Father's house. I am going, to prepare a place for you and when I have gone and prepared you a place, I shall return to take you with me so that where I am you maybe too."
Now what more do you want to know about death and dying and life in heaven? It is all contained in those few words which our Blessed Lord spoke at the Last Supper. It contains the whole purpose of Christ's coming and his mission to bring mankind to heaven by breaking the power of death and the grave forever.
He did this as God made Man by laying down his life blood on the Cross. "You know me and so you know the Father". Knowledge of God - union with the Saviour - Jesus preparing my place in heaven with my name on it and the at my end coming to bring me with him so I am never alone even in my death...what wonderful mysteries - what a transformation for mankind who lived under the curse of death for centuries. The Resurrection has changed it all. The Shepherd has come back to the flock and leads it to eternal pastures.
He feeds us with Himself in the Holy Sacrament of the Altar. "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives IN ME and I IN HIM". You cannot get much closer that that can you so it is no wonder our Lord promises that he will be with us in death and take us by the hand and bring us WITH him. Like holding daddy’s hand isn’t it when you are facing the uncertain and the unknown. Well, we all have to face up to our mortality and this should lift us out of any dread or depression. Life is a great and most wonderful gift - every minute of it but God has given us a life that will now, never end and even our bodies will rise again. After six funerals in five days these truths are deeply embedded in me! May they all rest in peace.

Reader. Christ is the Saviour who takes each of us by the hand and calls each of us by name and guides us throughout our lives; may we, his little flock, willingly take up his embrace and with a strong will accompany Him on our Pilgrimage of life. LORD HEAR US. For all who have to sadly part from their loved ones either through emigration or for work or because of persecution and especially our fellow Catholics in Iraq – that they will enjoy a homecoming filled with faithful friendship and love. Lord hear us. For all who are bereaved and long to see the one they have loved. May our Lord’s words and his promises strengthen their faith in eternal life and bodily resurrection. Lord hear us.
