THIRTIETH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR IN ORDINARY TIME CYCLES A READINGS.+
MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST.
My Dear People,
Love of God and neighbour is fundamental to our religion. The works of charity instituted by the Church in every age of mankind is a terrific tribute to the faith of the People in God in the Divine teaching of the Master.
It is a bit different is it not to be actually "Commanded" to love. We tend to think of "love" being a free act of spontaneity and yet we know that love can grow from a small beginning.
When we were children we learnt that God "was worthy of all my love". May be at the time we did not fully understand what we were being taught but one thing is for sure if you do not teach your children to Love God with all their heart and soul and strength and their neighbour as themselves then they will never learn. It comes form the parent’s lap I think.
Is this a heard commandment - one difficult to keep? I think not. From the earliest of years one learns that one MUST LOVE GOD and if you are directed to God and taught how is has revealed himself to us in Christ Jesus, how Jesus suffered and died on the Cross for us – how God created us and gave us breath in our lungs and life – and created everything in the wonderful nature and universe around us – why would we not learn to love Him?
Keeping the commandments shows my love for God. "It is not those who say to me" 'Lord, Lord' who will enter heaven but those who DO THE WILL OF MY FATHER."
You see we are not left rudderless to make up our own purpose. God chose to create us in his own image and likeness. By his own free will he created us out of love. It was God who wanted to share his life with us and invite us to intimacy and friendship with him. So with John the Apostle, our diocesan patron – we can truly know that “God love us first”. So God gives us a reason to respond to his initiative. He began this wonderful adventure of being a human being with all that that entails.
What a wonderful gift life is and even better the gift of eternal life in Jesus through Baptism and the Holy Spirit. You can see in the first reading from the book of Exodus how great the Jewish revelation was about how we were to deal with people.
How neglected some of that Judeo-Christian ethic is neglected today. The less people know and love their creator the more unloving and unappreciative and insensitive they become. It stands s to reason that if you don't love God you will find the rest of love business a bit tedious s and lacking clarity and focus. It all becomes a bit of a game of chance.
My foundation for life is this “God made me to know him and to love in this world and to be happy with him forever in the next”. Recognise that? All of you over 45 will - it is the old Penny Catechism answer to "Why did God make me?"
My dear people it is still true and we must make it a rule of life - to love, to love and to love again. If you make that the measure of your life you will change the world and make Christ present in many more places and situations. As The Little Flower said "I will be LOVE in the heart of the Church." Look what effect she has had who died of TB, young, in an obscure convent in France? That is what the love of God and neighbour can do. God indeed is totally worthy of all my love.
God Bless you,
Fr Tom Connolly.
