TRINITY SUNDAY + THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE. + 3 JUNE 2012.

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST

THIS WEEKEND UP TO TUESDAY IS THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE AND THE PRAYER PRINTED HAS BEEN ORDERED BY OUR BISHOPS TO BE PRAYED AT MASS THIS SUNDAY AND THE FIRST READING WILL BE DIFFERENT TOO. MAY GOD BLESS HER MAJESTY AND PRESERVE HER FOR THE SIXTY YEARS OF DEDICATION AS OUR MONARCH.

My Dear People,

Today is Trinity Sunday. The Mystery of God is disclosed as Triune. We think of St Patrick and the three leaves of the one plant - the shamrock. But I want to go for another comparison - the human family and the atom.

Life is strange isn't it? Here is the Government telling us that they want to extend Marriage to include two men and two women. They will have to change many laws to do that. For instance "not consummation" has to be omitted to show a marriage was invalid. Why? Well - it is obvious that same sex cannot "consummate" can they? The Holy Father calls this whole idea of redefining Marriage as a moral pollutant of humanity. You may redefine grass as coloured RED but it will remain green. God made Marriage and man cannot dedefine it. Our Faith purified marriage by maingi one man and one wife the only pattern permitted by Divine Revelation. Muslims can have man so called "wives" - we cannot. It is also rasied to the level of a holy Sacrament of the New Covenant - imitiating the love of Jesus Christ for his Bride the Holy Church - which is his Body. H.M. Government and Opposition shows no respect for Marriage and all three political parties failed to mention the word MARRIAGE in their manifestos as far as I am aware but none of them said that they were going to redefine Marriage to include the same sex marrying. My denying the true nature of marriage between a man and women who bear children and establish family life they deny the only way known to civilisation of bringing up children and forming them. With your mum and dad - or at least one of them - the kid is lost or in great danger. Social Security refers to "Partners" not "Spouses".

The statistics this week is that we have reached the 50% mark of children born outside wedlock. The connection between the lawlessness and criminal behaviour of gangs of youths - boy and girls - and the lack of Marriage in society is not made is it?

How does a child learn RESPECT but from their mother and father? In an ideal world the child has a right to the exclusive love and security of married parents who are seriously committed to one another. Now this does not always work out but at least if it is the aim and the norm, usually one can rescue the situation. However if you never set out on the road to marriage and yet live together and have children – you are on the road to nowhere. Some see Marriage as outdated. No matter how good the intention - statistically you and your offspring are likely to end up with no job, poor housing, bad mental health and low achievement at school. On top of all that he/she is more likely to end up with a record. I need not add of course that you probably will not be brought up as a true Christian even if you are baptised. Me and Fr George are tempted to throw a party when a couple come for their baby’s baptism wearing a wedding ring!

Now - that might be connected with the Feast of the Holy Trinity or it might not! I think it is. In many ways the FAMILY reflects the nature of God. A couple become a Trinity don't they once they give birth to child - they are three in One. One marriage, One Love, and three persons. There is a natural and supernatural connection. We Christians call God our Father and refer to Jesus our Saviour as "the Eternal Son" and the Holy Spirit as the bond of Love. Everything in nature reflects the Triune God who has been revealed to us by the Only Begotten One, the Son of Mary and the Eternal Son of the Father.

These are terms which are drawn from family life - parental titles, births, conceptions, relationships. It is not an accident that Jesus refers us to "Our Father" is it?

Mind, Body, Soul makes up the Human Person. The atom - the very building block of all material things is made up of a threesome. Nothing is constituted alone in isolation. Nothing is alone in its make-up. The whole of creation is "in relationship" and these relationships make up the Oneness of an entity. Now you science students among us might see this as bad science but you see my degree is social science not the hard one- but you will forgive me.

The Mystery of the God who made us all and the whole universe must be complex and yet totally simple pure form and spirit. He is not subject to what He has created. We celebrate today the great doctrine, fundamental to all Christians. It is the defining doctrine and it is The Truth and the only Truth and it is revealed to us as a great honour. "What is man that you keep him in mind-mortal man that you care for him?"

God has made us a little less than Himself the scripture says in the Psalm. .He has raised us up by this sacred disclosure of his Divine Nature and participation of the Divine Nature which we receive fully in Christ in our Baptism.

It might seem a long shot from the Holy Trinity but in the end we are all connected!

Happy Feast,

Father Tom Connolly
