Sermon for 6 May 2012

My Dear People,

Next Saturday at 10am the First Communion children of our parish will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. The words of our Saviour will become true for them. "I shall pray to the Father and he will send you the Spirit of Truth who will remind you of everything I have said to you."

These children are the tendrils of the Great Vine of the Holy Universal and Apostolic Church. Jesus is the Vine and we are his branches. We live with His life. His sap runs through our being. That sap is the Holy Spirit himself who is given to us from above. He is the first Gift of the newly Risen Christ. Our Lord breathed on the Apostles when he came through the locked doors of the Upper Room. He said "Peace I give you. (Breath) receive the Holy Spirit - whose sins you forgive they are forgiven. Those whose sins you retain, they are retained."

This wonderful Gift of God is won by our Blessed Lord's suffering and death. His side, pierced on the cross opened for us the treasures of Divine grace. As the Fathers of the church have said - our Lord's wounded side on the cross was the purse torn open to pay the price of our Redemption. Jesus redeemed us at great cost you know. He is the Incarnate Word - the Creator of all things and yet out of love he died for us a most cruel death. The Vine is one and the unity Jesus bestows on his Church is also a great gift. This unity of the vine and the branches guarantees that the sap of God’s life runs through our spiritual lives. The consequences of sin are that we cut off this life saving sap and what happens? Well our Lord tells us - it is obvious - we get cut off and the branch dries up and is good for nothing.

We will bear much fruit if we remain part of him. I pray that the children being Confirmed will grow in Faith and withstand the temptations of the world to cut off and go it alone. The modern culture is an atomised one - each one for himself and it is not the way of the Christian. We live as one – united with one another though our unity with Jesus in the Holy Spirit who sanctifies us and keeps us in harmony with the Great Vine. What a joy it is my dear people to live with his life. To hear these words today addressed to each and everyone of us is a great gift and a great joy - "I am the wine, you are the branches". Imagine that for a picture of unity and togetherness with our Blessed Lord. We can relax if we can take this on board and know that apart from him we can do nothing. So – hang in there folks and enjoy just being part of his Wine.

When I made my First Communion I had to colour in a picture of the Vine and the Branches and I have never forgotten that in my First Holy Communion I could experience first hand being so much more part of the Vine which is Jesus.

God Bless you all.
