Solemnity of the Papal Arch Basilica of St John Lateran. Rome + Month of the Holy Souls. 9th November 2014.
MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST.
My Dear People,
Today the whole Catholic Church celebrates the Dedication of the Cathedral of the Pope - the Bishop of Rome the Successor of the Apostle Peter appointed by our Lord as the Head of the Church. Most People think St Peter's is the Pope’s Cathedral but it is not.
St John Lateran was the first church built and dedicated in the Western world in about 324 AD so it is the Head and mother Church of the whole world.
The importance is what the building of this Cathedral demonstrated. It was that the Christians were free to go public and secure enough to construct a massive church for the celebration of the worship of God as laid down by our Lord in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the preaching of the Word and the celebration of all the saving Sacraments. The Popes lived in the Lateran Palace next door; built over the ruins of the fort which the bodyguard of Roman Emperor used to reside. (AD193) That contains a great sign does it not? We won! But things are bad for us people of Faith now. The Christian culture demonstrated by the building of the Lateran Basilica is under attack even from within our own nations.
You will have read during the week the Government report for our schools to tell young people as young as 13 that it is "normal" to engage in sexual activity. Thus the Christian culture of Chastity is totally disregarded is it not? Self control is hardly mentioned and therefore the respect for the person is lost.
As Prince Charles said the other day - the Christian Faith is under great persecution and indeed martyrdom again in so many parts of the world. Militant Islam thinks nothing of destroying the Christian churches of Syria and Iraq where we predate them by centuries. Prince Charles was talking about the tolerance and love the Christian faith imparts and witnessed to his own beliefs and his Christian upbringing.
Saint Paul addresses us directly in the Second Reading and calls us "God’s Building". St Paul is the Architect and Christ is the Foundation stone and we become the Temple of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. We are the new "House of God". Our Lord drove the money changers of of his Father's House for his zeal and respect for that Holy Place. It was soon to be supplanted by his own Body becoming the "Temple".
Now, St Edwards was consecrated or dedicated a long time ago and St Kentigern's only in my time (1939 built, 1998 consecrated) but both ceremonies represented the growth of Christ's Body in a new place at the time they were built (1860 for St Edwards and Consecrated in 1981). We pray for Pope Francis too today – the Bishop of Rome and Universal Pastor.
God Bless to you all as winter comes in.
Father Tom Connolly.
SUNDAY 7TH DECEMBER AFTER THE 11AM MASS ST KENTIGERN’S WILL BE HAVING A CHRISTMAS FAIR SO I WOULD BE VERY HAPPY IF YOU BEGAN DONATING ITEMS WHICH WE CAN EASILY SELL AND MAKE SOME DOSH FOR THE PARISH. MOST OF ALL PLEASE MAKE A NOT OF IT AND ATTEND AND BRING THE FAMILY TOO. LOTS OF THINGS TO DO AND REFRESHMENTS.
The Forty Hours Devotion at St Kentigern's will end at 4pm with Solemn Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament . Do make a big effort to come to the conclusion of this great devotion. Our Lord, in his Real Presence has been exposed to us for four days on the Altar and people have come and prayed and adored and our Lord is very pleased. You have bought all those lovely wax candles, the work of the bees and they have been burning all that time. The flowers which decorate the altar are sublime and they are they work of love and devotion too and the product of God's lovely creation. Where would we be without flowers?
Bidding for St John Lateran
Priest: Since we are living stones in the temple of Christ's body, let us pray to the Father for his Beloved Church and profess our faith in her.
Reader: Father, cleanse the vineyard of your church, watch over it with care and cultivate it with love, until it fills the world and is wonderful to see and experience. Lord in your mercy.
Eternal Shepherd, protect and extend the sheepfold of your Church. Let there be one flock, with your Son, its only Shepherd. Lord in your mercy.
Father, sow your word in the field of the Church; produce its crop a hundred fold for your eternal harvest. Lord in your mercy.
God of Wisdom, sanctify your House and all the members of your family; let men and women see the Heavenly City, the new Jerusalem the Bride, adorned with Glory. Lord in your mercy.
We pray for our dear sick and those who care for them and the soldiers who are victims of the present wards and are injured or disabled: Michael Connolly, Peter Collins, Julie Brady, Thomas Moran, Gerald Vince, Mary Farrelly-Stiles, Denis and Tony McLaughlin. Lord in your mercy.
Lord Jesus, anyone who comes to you is never turned away; admit all those who have died into your Father's House: We commend all the dead of the Two World Wars and all those who died in War on this Remembrance Sunday in our Nation. We pray for Brendan Ryan, Jack Philbin, Fr Kevin Griffin, Father Brogan, Elaine Callaghan AND those whose anniversaries occur about this time: Jo Kirby (VIGIL), Mary Keady, Tom Kelly, Teresa and Maurice Cain, Jessica Fagan, Adrian Fisher (11.30 Mass 8th Nov), Sean Daly (15th Nov VIGIL MASS).
May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, thru the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Mary our mother, we salute you as the mother of all the redeemed and the sources of Body of Christ: hail Mary.. O Mary conceived without sin. Pray for us who have recourse to thee.
Priest: Lord, you have called your people to become your Church. Grant that all who are gathered here on this feast may be helped by your grace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
