NINETEENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR + A” 10th August 2014.

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST.

My Dear People,

August they say is a silly month for news and other trivia but for some it is the most important part of the year - the family holiday. It is always wonderful to behold mothers and fathers playing with their children and seeing the children bask in the love of their parents and brothers and sisters, happy and care free.

For me my holiday was a real relaxation one with serious chill out on the coast of Majorca, swimming and relaxing by the pool or in the sea. With a good G and T before Supper. God is good.

The Gospel today is such a lesson for the Church. Like a storm tossed boat she moves through the waters of this world, bearing within it the Saviour of mankind, Jesus Christ our Lord. He appears to be asleep. We cry out with the Apostles, "Lord save us or we will perish" and we are full of fear. I am full of fear when I see that the Catholic priesthood is a dying breed. There is no Church without priests and there are too few of us. But - I must not be afraid. Christ in the barque of Peter and headed by our Holy Father, Pope Francis - we will continue to bear Christ in the heart of the boat and he will not allow our craft to sink even if it might appear to be overwhelmed sometimes by the power of the tempest and the wind and the sea. Not for us to be called "men of little faith" eh?

We must have confidence. The Church headed by the modern Peter is the same boat which Peter left beseeching his Divine Master to beckon him. As he felt the force of the waves, he took his eyes and focus off our Lord and experienced that sinking feeling. But you will notice that although Peter panicked, the Master's hand was there straightaway and held Peter and in an instant they were in the boat and the wind fell. Peter experienced a supernatural intervention there you know. Pope John Paul, Saint John Paul II used to say "Push out into the deep". He did it by example and look what he did for God in a world which did not exactly go along with his teaching. Let us meditate on this account and apply it to the Church in Salford.

The Bishop and the Diocese have been in Lourdes this week with the many sick and they will be praying for us all and the rest of the sinners as our Lady told Bernadette. Nine hundred pilgrims, Lorraine Leonard of course leading the youth of our Diocese there.

God Bless,

Father Tom Connolly

CHURCH INTERNET. What do you think? I have arranged for anyone in the world who has access to the Internet to visit our church. They can hear us and see us offering the Holy Mass, they can take part in a wedding from Australia let us say of a niece or nephew. A funeral could be watched from the other side of the globe. People can just choose to visit our Church when we have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in the morning before Mass or in the afternoon and what is more – they will be able to hear what is going on. Many parishes have it but I think we might be the first in our patch. St Peter's Hazel Grove has it but that is not in our diocese! I have to make sure parents do not mind servers appearing!! Hopefully this will open on the Solemnity of the Assumption - 15th August - the Holy Day of Obligation Friday next. Tell me what you think. It will communicate the Catholic Faith to a much wider set of folk eh? It might attract back the lapsed too.

Iraq's Christians are facing annihilation. Following the fall of the largest Christian town on 6-7 August to Isis they face genocide according to their Bishop. The seizure of Qaraqosh by jihadist mean one hundred thousand Christians have had to flee in the clothes they stood it- frail elederly, women with babies at the breast, toddlers , youths of all kinds, couples- fleeing their Bishop says. They need water, food and shelter. Their Patriarch Sako has appealed to the International community. ISIS told them that their homes were confiscated and took their wedding rings and money and said - become Muslim or die - They ran.I am sending money to the Aid to the Church in Need.
