FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT. + 30TH November 2014. + CYCLE B READINGS.
MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST.
My Dear People,
Advent is with us once more and the Voice of the one crying in the wilderness is heard once more as John the Baptist invites the whole of humanity to turn to God and be reconciled during this Advent season.
Our Lord tell us to "stay awake" to be ready for when the Master returns. The Master of the house is of course, our Blessed Lord - the Divine Saviour of the world... the Divine Word.
How much our fallen world needs to hear this invitation from our Lord's lips. He was destined to give his life as a ransom for many for he offended the powerful and the mighty and the immoral. What would Our Lord say to our Lawmakers who at this juncture pass deeply offensive laws against the Divine and Natural Law and defy God and mock those who believe in God and follow his ways? What would our Lord make of the Bankers who have loaded us with money in loans which they had only on a promise and not in reality? Surely the Master would have made a good parable out of this mess and the greed and avarice is displays. There was a suddenness about this financial crisis which is almost Biblical in its suddenness and surprise that everyone expressed. Just when there was to be an end to "Boom and Bust" we have Boom and Bust from morning till night. I have met many people who have lost their jobs and times are very hard for many people. Laurel and Hardy would have a good script here - "what do you call this mess" the fat man would say.
However we are full of hope. The world's riches cannot be relied upon now can they? May be when folk see the alternative as the Catholic way of life they will embrace the faith more fervently and men and women of good will be drawn to us by mutual sympathy. Many converts come to the Faith you know because of the Catholic teaching being so clear and un-muddled. If you do not stand for anything nobody stands for you.
I saw the TITANIC exhibition this week with Father Gabor and one of the accounts of the survivors was the sight of the Catholic Priest, Father Byers, hearing confessions on deck, and as the ship sank, reciting the Rosary out loud. He refused a place in the life boat because he wanted to be there to provide spiritual help. He was deeply aware of helping the people to meet our Lord so Indeed - "Stay AWAKE".
In Advent, the voice of the Baptist is the voice of all you humble people who simply live faithfully by Christ's teaching and who are imbibed with his Holy Spirit. John's voice is heard in the figure of good Pope Francis as he talks to the European Parliament this week last week , in your priests and in your parents who pass onto to their dear children the Catholic and Apostolic faith. Hearts must turn to Christ and embrace him if they are to find their true home and harbour.
The massive intervention of God in history was prepared for by John, a mighty prophet and he was the last Old Testament prophet. He leapt for joy when he was in Elizabeth's womb when Our Lady's voice cried out to her kinswoman a blessing. Jesus was present in Mary's womb and so the first Visitation was taking place. He was filled with the Holy Spirit before he was born therefore.
Advent will be a good time for us. Make a good Confession.
Have a blessed Advent.
