TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR B

18TH OCTOBER 2015. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST.

My Dear People,

The Twelve Apostles were like children sometimes. We hear them today, grown men, discussing which one is he king of the castle. The Sons of Zebedee , dear St John and his bruv – James – had got their dear mother to deal a serious bit of ear wigging and PR for her sons – the zealots as they were called because of their politico strong ideas vis- a- vis the Romans. (They were strong Nationalists and wanted the Romans to go home).

It is sad really to listen to the whole episode when you reflect on the fate and destiny of these two apostles. They did not know what they were asking for did they? At this point of time, did not really understand our Blessed Lord's mission and purpose. Hence our Lord speaks kind words to them - "You do not know what you are asking for...?" Indeed they did not. "Can you drink that cup that I must drink and be baptised in the same baptism (of blood and suffering) that I will be baptised with???"

They say that they can but with the attitude they have at this moment they will not be able to. After Pentecost- all became possible and our Lord knew it of course, which is why he strings their mother along a bit, and plays on words rather than telling her to Get Lost.

It is then that the rest hear about what has been going on with James and John and they are mad with the brothers. However our Lord corrects them all and gives us the great teaching which has created a new civilisation of love - that to be great, men and women in the Christian dispensation, have to becomes the servants of all. You know that the Pope's title is "SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD".

So that it what it is all about – not high places on the left and the right in the ruling class but to be humble servants of all – indeed our Lord uses the word "SLAVE". He then shows that the example he gives us is exactly that. The Son of Man (Jesus Christ) came to serve, not to be served and to GIVE his life as a ransom for MANY. So how can we follow a different path? We must find our fulfilment in our love and service of our brethren. Parents after all spend themselves in service of their children don’t they and think nothing of it and their love and care bears fruit in lovely young people.

Our Lord's way is the way of service and humble service at that. When all is complete at the end of my life I can only say to our Lord "Here I am – I was only doing your will."

We hope to hear those words from our Lord's own lips in Heaven "Well done good and faithful SERVANT – come and enter into the joy of your Lord." I say that over every grave before the body gets lowered into it.

Now there is something to look forward to and to cheer us up as we begin the dark nights again and the old CH boiler gets turned up.

God Bless you all,

Father Tom Connolly.
