THE SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST, THE UNIVERSAL KING. + 22nd NOVEMBER 2015 + MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS + CYCLE B

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRIEST

My Dear People,

Standing in front of Pilate our Lord acknowledge he was a King – but not a King of this world. Pilate was impressed. No Jew, captive in front of him had ever spoken like this. Remember too that his wife had had bad dreams about "this man" the night before and forewarned her Husband to have nowt to do with "this man". "Yes I am a King, I was born for this, I came into the world for this - to bear witness to the truth..."" Pilates famous reply elsewhere is "And what is truth?". Such a cynical Man he was. But there we have it – the origin of this Feast - Solemnity is in that title of King for which our Lord was crucified. Remember the INRI fixed to the top of his Cross meaning in Latin and Greek and Hebrew "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews". That was the crime he had committed and all those crucified had their crime written above their heads as they hung on their crosses. The Jewish Authorities told Pilate that he had made a mistake that he should have written "HE SAID, HE WAS KING..." "What I have written , I have written" responded Pilate. Something really had touched Pilate you know at that encounter with the Divine Son of Mary!!! I wonder what dreams his wife had had. I would love to know, wouldn't you?

Again, another encounter: was it not wonderful for the good thief during our Lord's Passion to be able to say from his cross "Lord remember me when you come into your kingdom."

Well it was very good, for in response he is promised, that very day, the gift of paradise – Heaven itself – that very day with Jesus. The bad thief just kept up the cynical comments of the crowd – "if you are the son of God – save us and save yourself". Thus the Church is mocked today but she has that secret in her very heart and she recognises Jesus present in the conversion of heart of guys like the good thief in his last hours of life on earth. There is something here about the psychology of sin and free will I think. The two thieves stand for the two types of people in relating to God. The good guy sees that he is getting what he deserved for the crimes he has committed. That in itself is a rare insight for most of the guilty ones still blames others not themselves don’t they? When I was part time chaplain at HM Prison Strangeways and Youth Detention Centre, Campsfield rarely did the prisoner admit his guilt to me. After all at the very beginning of sin - Adam said to God "It was the woman!" The bad thief is talking a lot of common sense but he has no insight into his situation and will probably not end up in Paradise with Jesus that day or may be ever - who knows. But St Dismas, as the good thief is known, had great insight given to him and was able to make that prayer: "Remember me when you come into your Kingdom". That is a great prayer of faith from a guy being crucified and yet recognising that our Lord was innocent and did not deserve this punishment and that he was a King truly with a Kingdom.

St Paul is able to also confess a great statement of Faith _”Christ is the Image of the Unseen God - in him were created all things- before anything was created – he existed – he holds all things in unity. In Hebrews he says much the same: "Jesus Christ is the Faithful witness, the First Born from the Dead, the Ruler of the Kings of the earth." "The Alpha and Omega - the Beginning and the End, who is and who was and is to Come- the Almighty." Thus Paul speaks with the voice of the Holy Spirit. How did Paul get this insight – this grand vision of the Supreme Office of Jesus Christ – all the Thrones, Sovereignties and Powers were created by him – all things visible and not visible... it is amazing ?

Today we too have to make an act of Faith - The evil and anti Christ and anti God Powers are reigning everywhere. Governments and the UN cannot get enough time to enact really evil and immoral laws, raising vices to virtues by diktat of an Act of Parliament. They will get their comeuppance you know. Christ is their Supreme judge too and God will not be mocked. Christ is the Universal King and his reign will never come to an end and when this lot of God haters are gone in our generation – Christ will still be loved, adored and worshipped by millions and millions of the children of this earth. The memory of the Pol Pot and others like them – where are they now? Those who strove to see the human rights laws as embodying the right to destroy life in the womb at will – where will they be when Christ comes in all his Glory to judge the living and the dead -? They will be Cowering behind the nearest rock no doubt! Evil doers of all kinds have a chance of a change of heart otherwise they risk the loss of their souls forever in Hell. One cannot hide from the Living God make visible in Christ Jesus our Lord – our Universal King.

God Bless

?Father Tom Connolly.
