Vatican, The
The headquarters of the Roman Catholic church, in Rome. In the Lateran treaty of 1929, the Vatican City was created, a wholly independent state contained within Italy.
Venial Sin
In Roman Catholic theology, the lesser of the two categories of sin. It does not result in loss of sanctifying grace, but is still serious. Usually venial sins are forgiven through the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance).
Vulgate
Latin: 'common'. The first complete translation of the Bible into Latin, made by St. Jerome. It is the official version approved by the Roman Catholic church.
